Product Overview

The Sugia OmniScope S4 is a high-temperature-rated articulating industrial videoscope capable of 200°C continuous ambient operation at the probe tip and 150°C at the insertion-tube mid-section. This temperature capability exceeds the 80–100°C rating of standard industrial videoscopes by a factor of 2×, enabling in-service inspections of fired process heaters, gas-turbine hot-section components during controlled cooldown, and furnace internals at significantly elevated temperatures compared to conventional videoscopes.

Achieving 200°C operation with 4-way articulation required a ground-up redesign of the probe-tip actuator assembly. Standard SMA (shape-memory-alloy) tension wires lose actuation authority above approximately 120°C due to the alloy’s austenite-finish temperature constraints. The S4 replaces SMA wires with high-temperature MP35N cobalt-nickel alloy tension cables terminated in ceramic (zirconia) pulleys at the probe tip, driven by external servo motors in the temperature-isolated handpiece. This mechanical-drive architecture is inherently temperature-insensitive at the probe tip, limited only by the Curie-point of the magnetic encoder sensors (rated to 250°C).

The optical system uses a fused-silica objective lens element (softening point > 1600°C) and a thermally isolated CMOS sensor module with a Peltier-element active cooling stage that maintains the sensor at ≤ 60°C in a 200°C ambient. A sapphire window at the probe tip provides thermal and chemical protection for the objective lens while maintaining broadband optical transmission from 400 nm to 2500 nm.

Key Engineering Features

  • 200°C Continuous Probe-Tip Rating: Validated per ASTM E317 test methodology with 200°C calibrated dry-block calibrator; probe survives 30-minute excursions to 230°C with no permanent optical or mechanical degradation.
  • MP35N Mechanical Articulation System: High-temperature cobalt-nickel alloy tension cables replace SMA wires; zirconia ceramic pulleys at the probe tip; external servo motors in the handpiece eliminate temperature-sensitive electronics from the probe. 150° articulation in all four axes at 200°C ambient.
  • Active Sensor Cooling: Peltier-element thermoelectric cooler maintains the CMOS sensor at ≤ 60°C in 200°C ambient; closed-loop PID temperature control with sensor-die temperature monitoring via embedded thermistor.
  • Fused-Silica Optics: Synthetic fused-silica objective element; sapphire protective window at probe tip; optical path maintains diffraction-limited performance from 0°C to 200°C with < 5 µm focal shift over the full temperature range.
  • Temperature-Logging with Image Metadata: Embedded probe-tip thermocouple (Type K) logs temperature at capture time; temperature reading embedded in image EXIF metadata and report header for inspection-condition documentation.

Target Applications

  • Fired Process Heaters: In-service convection-section tube external-surface inspection during reduced-firing conditions (probe inserted through inspection ports while the heater remains fired at minimum turndown); radiant-section tube-skin temperature anomaly investigation; burner-tile condition inspection during short-duration access windows.
  • Gas-Turbine Hot Section: As a heavy machinery diagnostic videoscope, the S4 performs combustion-liner and transition-duct inspection during controlled cooldown from full-load shutdown (probe inserted at 180–200°C component temperature, eliminating the 4–6 hour cooldown wait required for standard 80°C-rated scopes); first-stage nozzle guide-vane platform inspection at elevated temperatures.
  • Industrial Furnaces: Glass-melting furnace refractory inspection through burner-ports during reduced-firing maintenance windows; heat-treatment furnace internal hearth-roller bearing inspection; cement kiln refractory hot-spot investigation.
  • Petrochemical: As an NDT pipeline inspection tool in fired-process service, the S4 conducts fired-reformer catalyst-tube external hot-spot surveys during operation at reduced throughput; ethylene-cracking furnace radiant-coil external-surface temperature anomaly investigation; thermal-oxidizer internal refractory assessment.
